Snooping screensaver

Sure, the Arabesque screensaver in Leopard is breathtakingly beautiful, but what if you want something a bit more grunge? Well, you could opt for SurveillanceSaver, an OS X screensaver that pipes in the video feeds from over 600 open security camera feeds. Be warned: it can make for worryingly addictive viewing.

Back to my Mac – it doesn't work

One of the most exciting announcements for me about Leopard was Back to my Mac, the .Mac-based service that would allow you to access files on and share the screens of any of your computers from any of your computers, all over the internet. And now that I have my Mac mini and my MacBook all Leoparded up, I was looking forward to trying it out. But it doesn't work for me at the moment, and judging by the announcement on Apple's .Mac support pages, I'm not the only one:

Attention Back To My Mac users
In the coming weeks, we will be improving compatibility with home-based routers and various network environments. So if you find that you cannot access your remote Mac right away, please be patient as we work to improve the service.

Add this to the continuing 'maintenance' to the .Mac sync system – which has seen some Mac users unable properly to sync for 18 days – and I'm starting to get annoyed with this premium service. Has anyone got Back to my Mac working?

(I should point out that I can control my home Mac mini remotely from the office, but that involves Apple Remote Desktop and some port forwarding niftiness on my router; I was hoping for a neater, simpler solution.)

Get your credit card ready: iPhone on Sale This Friday Night at Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse

iPhoneJust a heads-up that the iPhone will go on sale this Friday, November 9 at 6:02 p.m. at Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse retail and online stores in the UK.

6.02? Now why would that be? I thought about this for a minute - is there some technical reason why it has to be 2 minutes past 6.... hmmm... not really... then it hit me. Ask yourself the following question. What network is the iPhone available on?

Ah, I can feel the light bulbs swithching on. :)

In total there will be 1,300 Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse retail locations across the UK where you can be amongst the first to get your hands on an iPhone. Don't forget to send us your pictures of the queues and we'll post them here!
