Some details from today's announcements you may have missed

  • It looks to be a sealed battery on the MacBook Air – no swapping batteries to give you more life, and when the battery dies...

  • No Ethernet port on the MacBook Air; you have to buy a USB-to-Ethernet, and with only one USB port on the Air, you won’t be able to use any other USB devices.

  • Migration Assistant now works over your wireless network; just as well since the MacBook Air has no FireWire port.

  • Remote Disk – a technology that lets you mount CDs and DVDs inserted into other computers on your network directly onto the MacBook Air’s desktop over its wireless connection – even means you can run Mac installers from discs inserted into PCs.

  • Steve Jobs giveth... The Air comes with adaptors to convert the Micro-DVI port to DVI and VGA

  • and Steve Jobs taketh away... The Apple Remote is a £9 extra.

  • According to John Gruber’s research, HD movies are only viewable on the Apple TV, not on your desktop or laptop.

  • You can now get Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes on your iPod touch... but it’ll cost you an extra £13.

  • To date, Apple has sold 4m iPhones; it market share is the same as Palm, Motorola and Nokia put together.

  • The new iTunes Digital Copy concept – an iTunes-friendly version of a DVD movie included on the same DVD – requires you enter a unique code for the film before it’s copied to your iTunes library. No naughty movie piracy for you.

Steve Jobs keynote 2008

Phew, and that's us done folks. We were entertained by Randy Newman, then Jobs closed the show; there was no 'one more thing'. Thanks for bearing with us through the problems with our internet connection!

So, what did you think of the announcements? Let us know in the comments!

Talking about the Air’s environmental record. Mercury free screen with arsenic-free glass.

$1799 – seems pretty damned cheap to us. Shipping in two weeks.

Battery life – 5 hours when doing surfing and emailing with WiFi on. 2GB RAM as standard.

New feature called Remote Disk in the MacBook Air; will show discs mounted on Macs and PCs on your network and you can access them. Even PCs can read Mac installer discs.

USB 2, Micro-DVI port and headphone jack. No optical drive; there is an optional external called SuperDrive for $99.

Intel Core 2 Duo; 1.6GHz as standard; 1.8GHz BTO option.

80GB 1.8in hard disk like in iPods – not SSD, but you could opt for a 64GB SSD.

Trackpad has Multi-touch gestures. Dougle tap and hold to move a window around. Two fingers on the trackpad to rotate photos. Three finger swipe to move between photos. And it has the iPhone’s pinch in and out control for zooming.

The thickest part of the MacBook Air is thinner than the Sony TZ series; it fits into a manilla envelope, which is how Steve is holding it now. It’s ridiculously slim (0.16in at the slimmest), but still has a 13.3in LED backlit display and full-size keyboard with the ambient light sensor.

Now talking about the fourth thing; “There’s something in the Air”. And yes! MacBook, MacBook Pro now joined by MacBook Air; the world’s thinnest notebook.

Now talking about DVDs; folks will still be buying DVDs for a while. And yes, there will be an iPod-ready copy available right on the DVD that you buy – no more illegal ripping!

Jim Gianopulos, chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox – the first company to sign up for rental – talking about the deal.

Price drop – $299 down to $229.

And yes, it’s all a free software upgrade for existing customers. You’ll be able to get it in two weeks.

We’re just getting a demo of the renting process; it’s pretty much as you’d expect. You can also buy music, TV shows and access podcasts. There are recommendations too. (“Viewers like you also rented...”)

New UI – it now looks a bit like a black, shiny Delicious Library with a menu in the centre.

You can also get photos from .Mac and Flickr directly now.

All the big players have tried (including Apple with AppleTV) to get movies onto the big screen. Jobs acknowledging that AppleTV was a missed opportunity; it was all about the movies. Now with AppleTV, you can rent in DVD quality and HD – hurrah! – no computer required. Can buy on AppleTV (including music) and if you do have a computer; it can sync back to your Mac. HD movies cost a dollar more to rent.

Software upgrades today in the US to allow it all; international releases ‘later this year’.

Lots of new releases and library titles. 1000 films from the end of Feb; available 30 days after DVD releases. Watch them on current iPods and iPhone – note that he mentioned ‘current’ iPods only...30 days to start watching it; 24 hours to watch it once you start watching. $2.99 for a library title, $3.99 for a new release.

Never offered music rentals because Apple things folks don’t want to rent music, but movies make sense. All the big movie studios are on board – a huge list.

125m TV shows and 7m movies sold; more than everyone else put together “but it did not meet our expectations. So today we’re introducing iTunes movie rentals.’

20m songs sold on Christmas day – a record for Apple.

The third thing we’re talking about today is iTunes. Last week Apple sold its 4 billionth song.

New features available in new iPod touches, but it’s a $20 upgrade for existing iPod touches. (Much muttering and muffles booos at this!)

iPod touch will now get Mail! Stocks, Notes and Weather. And Maps with WiFi triangulation.

All new iPhone features available today as free software update.

You can also navigate though films in chapters; and lyrics are displayed.

Google and Skyhook wireless together to do the fake GPS. Skyhook has mapped the position of WiFi hotspots; Google is doing a similar thing with cellphone masts; both triangulation technologies work together to compute where you are.

To customise home page, hold down on any icon; all the icons jiggle to show you that they’re all movable; you can drag the icons to be where ever you want. Can create up to 9 different customisable home screens.

There’s now a + button at the bottom of the browser screen; you can use this to add websites with icon right onto the home screen. These webclips can also remember where you’ve zoomed and panned in to.

Now demoing sending SMS to multiple people. Just as you’d imagine it to be...

View button curls up the page for map view to show you settings. Cellphone triangulation (presumably) to find where you are. Can also do directions. Can add locations through pins.

Now talking about the SDK – the kit that will allow developers to build iPhone apps. Here are some new features – Maps with location; Webclips; customise the home screen; SMS multiple people; chapter; lyrics in songs that have them.

The second thing we have to talk about is the iPhone. Today is the 200th day since the iPhone shipped; sold 4m units. 20,000 iPhones ever day. 19.5% market share in its first quarter; equal to Palm, Motorola and Nokia put together.

Talking about Time Machine; now, a new product: AirPort Extreme plus a hard drive; it’s called Time Capsule. Can back up your Macs – including notebooks – to the central thing. 500GB for $299 or $499 for 1TB. Ships in Feb.

Reminding us that Office 2008 has launched; the last big app to go native. Thanking Adobe and Microsoft.

We have 4 things to talk about today. #1 – Leopard; 5 million copies sold. Almost 20% has now upgraded.

“There’s clearly something in the air” – note though that the Air has an upper case A this time on the slide; all the others at the show have been lower case.

Steve Jobs takes the stage to much applause and whoopings!

Right, we’re finally into the keynote and just waiting for things to start. I have to warn you, though, that this USB modem I’m using has been giving me no end of problems, and it’s phenomenally slow even when it’s connected. Fingers crossed, folks...

And remember to keep refreshing the page; the latest updates will appear at the top of the page.
